European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
